Harker Heights is the third largest city in Bell County. Beginning with a population of 1,000 in 1960 to over 20,000 in 2000, Harker Heights is also one of the fastest growing cities in Texas. The City is unique in that it provides an excellent quality of life to residents and businesses. It is home to prosperous midsize businesses and prestigious neighborhoods that provide a picturesque view of the surrounding hills. The area's real estate market offers properties both for sale and lease. Harker Heights is a ten minute drive from Fort Hood, the largest U.S. military installation in the free world. Located just 10 miles West of I-35, it's an easy drive to the cities of Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth. Harker Heights has three elementary schools, two middle schools and the new Harker Heights High School all part of the Killeen Independent School District. Three college campuses are located in the immediate area: Central Texas College, Tarleton State University, and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. The city offers its citizens excellent police protection, providing safe and secure neighborhoods, first class fire protection within the city and portions of the county, and emergency medical service second to none. The Harker Heights Parks and Recreation Department provides a variety of group activities to a diversified population. Recreational facilities such as golf, tennis, racquetball, swimming, boating, camping, fishing, and horseback riding are available throughout the city. There are several parks and boat launching sights on the Stillhouse Hollow Lake Reservoir and Lake Belton. The newest city park with bike trails and walking paths was dedicated in April 2000 and named in memory of police officer, Carl Lavin. Commercial air traffic has moved to the Killeen -Fort Hood Regional Airport located on the western edge of Killeen city limits. It provides commuter air traffic to Dallas and Houston by American Eagle and Continental Express airlines.
